Summary
Triclofos is a sedative-hypnotic prodrug whose active metabolite, trichloroethanol, depresses the central nervous system. Combined with quetiapine, which is itself sedating, drowsiness, psychomotor impairment and next-day sedation can be amplified. Elderly or frail patients are at greater risk of falls and confusion.
What this interaction means in plain words
Quetiapine and Triclofos can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression through GABA-A potentiation by trichloroethanol and histamine H1 and alpha-1 blockade by quetiapine.
What to do
Start with the lowest effective dose of triclofos and monitor for excessive sedation, especially after dose changes. Advise patients to avoid driving and alcohol.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
