Summary
Rifampin can lower tolazamide exposure and weaken its glucose-lowering effect. Loss of glycemic control may appear within days to weeks of starting rifampin, and the effect may reverse after rifampin is stopped.
What this interaction means in plain words
Rifampin and Tolazamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Rifampin induces hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes, which accelerates the metabolism of sulfonylureas such as tolazamide.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose closely when rifampin is started or stopped and increase the tolazamide dose if needed. Reduce the dose again after rifampin is discontinued to avoid hypoglycemia.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
