Summary
Rufinamide is a weak inducer of CYP3A4 and may lower exposure to tolterodine, which is partly cleared by this enzyme. Reduced bladder-antimuscarinic effect is possible, although the clinical effect is expected to be small because the CYP2D6 pathway also contributes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Rufinamide and Tolterodine have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Rufinamide belongs to Central Nervous System; Tolterodine belongs to Genitourinary.
Why it happens
Weak CYP3A4 induction by rufinamide increases the metabolism of tolterodine.
What to do
No empirical dose change is needed; reassess urinary symptom control if rufinamide is started or stopped.
