Summary
Zanubrutinib impairs platelet function and can cause bleeding, and SSRIs such as sertraline also impair platelet aggregation and raise bleeding risk. Sertraline is a weak CYP3A4 inhibitor, so effects on zanubrutinib levels are small.
What this interaction means in plain words
Sertraline and Zanubrutinib can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Sertraline belongs to Central Nervous System; Zanubrutinib belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
Additive impairment of platelet function (BTK inhibition and serotonin depletion in platelets), with minor CYP3A4 inhibition.
What to do
Monitor for bruising, bleeding and falls in hemoglobin, and review other drugs that affect hemostasis. Zanubrutinib dose reduction is not routinely required with sertraline.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
