Summary

Triamterene is a potassium-sparing diuretic, and sulfasalazine has no meaningful potassium-raising action of its own. Any additive hyperkalemia is therefore not well supported, although sulfasalazine-related kidney injury could contribute in rare cases.

What this interaction means in plain words

Sulphasalazine and Triamterene have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Sulphasalazine belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Triamterene belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

No established mechanism for additive hyperkalemia; triamterene blocks distal tubular sodium channels and so retains potassium, while sulfasalazine adds no direct effect.

What to do

No routine action is needed. Check serum potassium and renal function periodically in patients with renal impairment taking triamterene.
