Summary
Yohimbine is an alpha-2 antagonist that raises sympathetic tone and blood pressure and may cause tachycardia. Combined with thioridazine, which prolongs the QTc and has alpha-blocking effects, it may increase the risk of arrhythmia and produce unpredictable blood pressure changes. Evidence is limited.
What this interaction means in plain words
Thioridazine and Yohimbine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Opposing adrenergic and pharmacodynamic effects together with thioridazine's QT prolongation; the mechanism is not firmly established.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, heart rate and ECG, and avoid yohimbine in patients with QT risk factors. Consider stopping yohimbine if palpitations or hemodynamic changes appear.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
