Résumé

Amikacin is nephrotoxic, and ceftazidime has been reported to add to renal injury when given with aminoglycosides. Cephalosporins alone are rarely nephrotoxic, so the additive risk is modest and mainly relevant with high aminoglycoside exposure, prolonged courses or existing renal impairment. The combination is commonly used deliberately for serious Gram-negative infections.

Ce que signifie cette interaction, en termes simples

Amikacin and Ceftazidime can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Amikacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Ceftazidime belongs to Anti Bacterial.

Niveau de preuve: Low

Pourquoi elle survient

Aminoglycosides accumulate in proximal tubular cells and cause tubular injury; cephalosporins may contribute additional tubular stress, though the mechanism is not clearly established.

Conduite à tenir

Use the combination when clinically indicated and dose both drugs for renal function. Monitor serum creatinine and urine output at baseline and at least two to three times weekly, and use amikacin therapeutic drug monitoring to keep troughs low.
