Résumé
Sodium picosulfate is a prodrug that needs colonic bacteria to convert it into its active laxative form. A broad-spectrum carbapenem such as meropenem can suppress colonic flora and may reduce the bowel-cleansing effect before colonoscopy.
Ce que signifie cette interaction, en termes simples
Meropenem and Sodium picosulfate / magnesium oxide / anhydrous citric acid can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Pourquoi elle survient
Antibiotic-induced reduction of colonic bacteria impairs conversion of sodium picosulfate to its active metabolite.
Conduite à tenir
Watch for inadequate bowel preparation in patients on the antibiotic and consider extra preparation or rescheduling if cleansing is poor. Where possible, avoid starting the antibiotic during the preparation window.
