Per cosa si usa
Come agisce
Methohexital is a sulfur-free barbiturate anesthetic. After intravenous administration it is rapidly taken up by the brain (within 30 seconds) and rapidly induces sleep. With single doses, the rate of redistribution determines the duration of effect. It provides little analgesia.
Dose abituale nell'adulto (sintesi del foglio illustrativo)
Induction of anesthesia: 1% solution IV at about 1 mL/5 seconds; usual dose 1 to 1.5 mg/kg (range 50 to 120 mg or more, averages about 70 mg); provides anesthesia for 5 to 7 minutes
Gravidanza e allattamento
- Gravidanza
- Unknown No adequate human studies; no developmental effects in rats and rabbits. FDA warns that lengthy or repeated general anaesthesia in the 3rd trimester may affect the developing brain (animal data). Use for needed anaesthesia or ECT at the usual dose.
- Allattamento
- Safe Amounts in milk are very small. US label: use with caution. LactMed: no waiting period is needed after a single dose; breastfeed as soon as the mother is alert enough. When several anaesthetic drugs are used, follow the most restrictive one.
Effetti indesiderati segnalati
- Hypotension
- Tachycardia
- Respiratory depression including apnea
- Laryngospasm
- Hiccups
- Skeletal muscle twitching
Avvertenze in evidenza
- Use only in hospital or ambulatory care settings with continuous monitoring of respiratory and cardiac function. Resuscitative drugs, age- and size-appropriate airway equipment and trained personnel must be immediately available. Deeply sedated patients need a designated individual other than the proceduralist to monitor continuously.
Controindicazioni
- Patients in whom general anesthesia is contraindicated
- Latent or manifest porphyria
- Known hypersensitivity to barbiturates
Chi deve prestare attenzione
- Laryngospasm, apnea/hypoventilation and cardiorespiratory arrest may occur; maintain airway and ventilation
- Seizures may be elicited in patients with a history of convulsive activity, especially partial seizure disorders
- Unintended intra-arterial injection may cause thrombosis, necrosis and gangrene; use 1% concentration and confirm venous placement
