Sintesi
Sodium picosulfate is a prodrug that needs colonic bacteria to convert it into its active laxative form. Antibacterial agents that reduce colonic flora could weaken the bowel-cleansing effect before colonoscopy. Aztreonam has activity against gram-negative aerobes, and the label for the preparation warns about antibiotic use.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Aztreonam and Sodium picosulfate / magnesium oxide / anhydrous citric acid can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Perché avviene
Antibiotic-induced reduction of colonic bacteria impairs conversion of sodium picosulfate to its active metabolite.
Cosa fare
Be alert to inadequate bowel preparation in patients receiving the antibiotic and consider extra preparation or rescheduling if cleansing is poor. Where clinically possible, avoid starting the antibiotic course during the preparation window.
Cosa chiedere al farmacista
