Sintesi
Ceftriaxone can form insoluble ceftriaxone-calcium precipitates when mixed with calcium-containing solutions such as lactated Ringer's. Fatal cases of lung and kidney crystal deposition have occurred in neonates. In neonates up to 28 days old, concurrent use is contraindicated, and in older patients the two must not be mixed or given simultaneously through the same line.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Ceftriaxone and Lactated ringer's are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Perché avviene
Physicochemical incompatibility: ceftriaxone binds calcium to form insoluble ceftriaxone-calcium salt that can precipitate in lines and in vivo.
Cosa fare
Do not give ceftriaxone to neonates (28 days or younger) who are receiving or expected to receive calcium-containing IV solutions.
