Sintesi
Ethiodized oil is an iodinated contrast agent. When given intravascularly (for example lymphography or chemoembolization) it may be associated with renal impairment and thereby reduce metformin clearance, with risk of lactic acidosis.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Ethiodized oil and Glipizide-metformin can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Perché avviene
Contrast-associated kidney injury reduces renal elimination of metformin, leading to accumulation and lactic acidosis.
Cosa fare
Hold metformin around intravascular administration in patients with eGFR below 30 or acute kidney injury. Restart after about 48 hours once renal function is confirmed stable.
Cosa chiedere al farmacista
