Para que é usado
Como funciona
Cation exchange resin, sodium ions partially released from polystyrene and replaced by potassium
Dose habitual em adultos (resumo da bula)
Hyperkalemia PO: 15 g once daily or q6-12hr
Gravidez e amamentação
- Gravidez
- Safe Not absorbed after oral or rectal use, so maternal use is not expected to expose the fetus (US label). UK label: no data, use only if the benefit outweighs the risk. Monitor potassium, calcium and magnesium, and watch for constipation.
- Amamentação
- Safe Not absorbed by the mother, so it does not reach milk; no infant risk is expected (US label, LactMed). UK label: no data, use only if the benefit outweighs any risk. LactMed: no special precautions needed.
Efeitos adversos relatados
- Sodium retention, Fluid retention.
- Constipation
- Hypokalemia
- Hypomagnesemia
- Nausea and Vomiting
Contraindicações
- Hypersensitivity to polystyrene sulfonate resins
- Hypokalemia
- Obstructive bowel disease
Quem deve ter cuidado
- Best when used in non-life-threatening hyperkalemia
- Hypokalemia may occur monitor serum potassium frequently within each 24 hr period; ECG monitoring may be appropriate in some patients; cation exchange resins may also affect concentrations of other cations, including calcium and magnesium
- Use caution with dosage forms containing propylene glycol; large amounts are potentially toxic; associated with hyperosmolality, seizures, lactic acidosis, and respiratory depression
