Summary

NSAIDs can reduce renal clearance of aminoglycosides, raising serum levels and potential nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. This has been described chiefly in preterm neonates, and NSAIDs are themselves nephrotoxic in at-risk patients.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amikacin and Oxaprozin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Amikacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Oxaprozin belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandins reduces glomerular filtration and aminoglycoside clearance.

What to do

Monitor serum amikacin concentrations and renal function when an NSAID is co-administered, especially in neonates, older adults or renal impairment. Avoid the NSAID if possible.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
