Summary
Low molecular weight heparins can suppress aldosterone synthesis and cause hyperkalemia, which adds to the potassium-retaining effect of amiloride. The risk rises with prolonged therapy, renal impairment or diabetes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amiloride and Dalteparin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amiloride belongs to Cardiovascular; Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Dalteparin inhibits adrenal aldosterone secretion, and amiloride independently reduces renal potassium excretion.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium, especially if treatment lasts more than several days or renal function is reduced. Stop amiloride if hyperkalemia develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
