Summary
Dopexamine, a beta2-agonist, can lower serum potassium by shifting it into cells, and hydrochlorothiazide causes renal potassium loss. Together hypokalemia may be more pronounced and may predispose to arrhythmias, although olmesartan partly offsets this.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine-olmesartan-hydrochlorothiazide and Dopexamine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive hypokalemia from beta2-mediated intracellular potassium shift plus thiazide-induced renal potassium wasting.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and ECG during dopexamine infusion and replace potassium as needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
