Summary
Verapamil adds to the hypotensive effect of amlodipine, and as a moderate CYP3A4 inhibitor it can raise amlodipine exposure. This may cause hypotension, edema, bradycardia or heart block, as verapamil also slows AV conduction.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine-valsartan and Verapamil can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amlodipine-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Verapamil belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive calcium channel blockade plus verapamil inhibition of CYP3A4-mediated amlodipine metabolism.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, heart rate and edema. Avoid combining dihydropyridine and non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers unless clearly needed, and reduce the amlodipine dose if hypotension occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
