Summary
Barbiturates induce hepatic enzymes and can lower concentrations of beta-blockers that are metabolized by the liver. Betaxolol is cleared partly by the liver, so its effect may be reduced, though renally cleared beta-blockers are less affected.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amobarbital and Betaxolol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amobarbital belongs to Central Nervous System; Betaxolol belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Amobarbital induces hepatic CYP enzymes, increasing betaxolol metabolism.
What to do
Monitor heart rate and blood pressure when starting or stopping amobarbital and increase the betaxolol dose if the response is lost. Reassess the dose after the barbiturate is discontinued.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
