Summary
Both drugs act on the central nervous system: pentazocine is an opioid analgesic and amoxapine is a sedating antidepressant. Together they can produce additive sedation and, less commonly, serotonin toxicity. Amoxapine also has some seizure-lowering potential, which opioids may compound.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amoxapine and Pentazocine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression plus possible additive serotonergic effects from amoxapine reuptake inhibition and pentazocine.
What to do
Use the lowest effective doses and monitor for excess sedation, respiratory depression and signs of serotonin syndrome. Counsel patients against driving and alcohol.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
