Summary
Rubella vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine that can cause disseminated infection in patients heavily immunosuppressed by anti-thymocyte globulin. Immune response is also impaired.
What this interaction means in plain words
Anti-thymocyte and Rubella vaccine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Impaired cell-mediated immunity permits uncontrolled replication of live attenuated virus.
What to do
Avoid live rubella vaccine during and after anti-thymocyte globulin until immune recovery is documented. Vaccinate at least 4 weeks before therapy if needed.
