Summary
Granisetron can mildly prolong the QT interval, and arformoterol, a long-acting beta-2 agonist, may prolong QTc and lower serum potassium. Together they may modestly raise the risk of ventricular arrhythmias, especially in patients with cardiac disease or electrolyte disturbances.
What this interaction means in plain words
Arformoterol and Granisetron can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Arformoterol belongs to Respiratory; Granisetron belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation, with beta-agonist-mediated hypokalemia and increased heart rate contributing to proarrhythmic risk.
What to do
Correct potassium and magnesium before starting and monitor ECG in patients with heart disease or other QT-prolonging drugs. Report palpitations or syncope promptly.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
