Summary
Both haloperidol and long-acting beta-2 agonists such as arformoterol can prolong the QT interval, and beta-agonists may lower serum potassium. Together they may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias, particularly in patients with heart disease or electrolyte abnormalities.
What this interaction means in plain words
Arformoterol and Haloperidol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Arformoterol belongs to Respiratory; Haloperidol belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation with beta-agonist-related hypokalemia.
What to do
Obtain a baseline ECG and check potassium and magnesium in patients with cardiac risk factors, and repeat if doses change. Correct electrolyte abnormalities before and during combined use.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
