Summary
Rifabutin is an inducer of CYP3A4 and could theoretically lower argatroban exposure. However, argatroban is cleared mainly by hepatic metabolism through hydroxylation and CYP3A4/5 contributes only a small share, so a meaningful loss of effect is unlikely.
What this interaction means in plain words
Argatroban and Rifabutin have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Argatroban belongs to Cardiovascular; Rifabutin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Possible induction of CYP3A4/5 by rifabutin increasing argatroban metabolism, which is a minor elimination pathway.
What to do
No dose change is needed; titrate argatroban to aPTT as usual.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
