Summary
Polymyxin B and neomycin may enhance or prolong the neuromuscular blockade produced by succinylcholine. This can lead to prolonged apnea and respiratory depression. The risk is mainly with systemic or irrigation use, not small topical areas.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bacitracin-neomycin-polymyxin and Succinylcholine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Bacitracin-neomycin-polymyxin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Succinylcholine belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Additive neuromuscular blocking effects of the aminoglycoside and polymyxin on top of depolarizing blockade.
What to do
Avoid systemic, irrigation or large-area combination antibiotic exposure around succinylcholine use where possible. If used, monitor neuromuscular function and have ventilatory support ready.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
