Summary
Flurbiprofen can reduce the antihypertensive effect of benazepril and may worsen kidney function, particularly in elderly, dehydrated or renally impaired patients. Hyperkalemia risk is also increased.
What this interaction means in plain words
Benazepril and Flurbiprofen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Benazepril belongs to Cardiovascular; Flurbiprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of cyclooxygenase reduces renal vasodilatory prostaglandins and sodium excretion, opposing ACE inhibitor effects and lowering glomerular filtration.
What to do
Prefer a non-NSAID analgesic; if the NSAID is needed, ensure adequate hydration and monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium after starting and periodically.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
