Summary

Benzphetamine is a sympathomimetic anorectic that can raise blood pressure and heart rate. Desflurane sensitizes the myocardium to catecholamines and can itself cause sympathetic activation, so arrhythmias and blood pressure swings are possible.

What this interaction means in plain words

Benzphetamine and Desflurane can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Sympathomimetic effects combined with volatile anesthetic sensitization of the myocardium to catecholamines; the interaction is largely theoretical.

What to do

Hold benzphetamine before elective anesthesia where feasible. Monitor blood pressure and ECG continuously and treat arrhythmias or hypertension promptly.
