Summary
Combining bupropion with an MAO inhibitor such as transdermal selegiline can cause hypertensive reactions and excessive dopaminergic and noradrenergic stimulation. The labeling for bupropion contraindicates use with MAOIs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bupropion-naltrexone and Selegiline transdermal are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Bupropion inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake while MAO inhibition reduces their breakdown, additively increasing catecholamine activity.
What to do
Do not coadminister; allow at least 14 days between stopping the MAOI and starting bupropion-naltrexone, and the reverse sequence similarly per labeling.
