Summary
Oral calcium would reduce absorption of oral bisphosphonates, but pamidronate is given intravenously in practice, so the absorption interaction seldom applies. Separately, IV pamidronate can lower serum calcium.
What this interaction means in plain words
Calcium and Pamidronate have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Calcium belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Pamidronate belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Calcium chelates oral bisphosphonates in the gut; this is not relevant to the intravenous route.
What to do
No spacing is needed for IV pamidronate; monitor serum calcium and correct hypocalcemia or vitamin D deficiency before and during therapy.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
- Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
