Summary
Intravenous calcium can increase myocardial contractility and may counteract the negative inotropic and hypotensive effects of beta-blockers. Calcium is sometimes used as part of the treatment of beta-blocker toxicity for this reason. In routine care, reduced esmolol effect is possible but usually short-lived.
What this interaction means in plain words
Calcium chloride and Esmolol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Elevated extracellular calcium enhances myocardial contractility and vascular tone, opposing beta-blocker effects.
What to do
Monitor heart rate and blood pressure when giving IV calcium during esmolol therapy and adjust the infusion rate to response.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
