Summary
Both thiazide diuretics and systemic glucocorticoids promote potassium loss, so combined use can lead to additive hypokalemia. This matters most with prolonged or high-dose corticosteroid therapy and in patients with heart disease or on QT-prolonging drugs. The candesartan component may partly offset potassium loss.
What this interaction means in plain words
Candesartan-hydrochlorothiazide and Prednisolone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Candesartan-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Prednisolone belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Additive renal potassium wasting from thiazide-induced distal sodium delivery and glucocorticoid mineralocorticoid activity.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and magnesium during prolonged or high-dose steroid courses and replace as required.
What to ask your pharmacist
