Summary
Imatinib inhibits CYP3A4, so cannabidiol exposure may increase with more sedation, somnolence and liver enzyme elevation. Cannabidiol may in turn inhibit CYP2C9 and other enzymes involved in imatinib metabolism, but the effect on imatinib is poorly defined.
What this interaction means in plain words
Cannabidiol and Imatinib can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Cannabidiol belongs to Central Nervous System; Imatinib belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
Imatinib inhibits CYP3A4 metabolism of cannabidiol, and cannabidiol may inhibit CYP2C9 and other enzymes involved in imatinib clearance.
What to do
Monitor for sedation and liver enzyme elevation and reduce the cannabidiol dose if adverse effects appear. Monitor imatinib tolerability, including liver tests.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?

Frequently asked questions
Can I take Cannabidiol with Imatinib?
MediHelp rates the interaction as moderate. Cannabidiol and Imatinib can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
How serious is the interaction between Cannabidiol and Imatinib?
MediHelp rates it moderate, on a four-level scale (minor, moderate, major, contraindicated) based on published labels and references. What to do, in brief: Monitor for sedation and liver enzyme elevation and reduce the cannabidiol dose if adverse effects appear. Monitor imatinib tolerability, including liver tests.
