Summary
Cannabidiol inhibits CYP2C19 and can increase sertraline concentrations, adding to its adverse effects. Sertraline's weak CYP3A4 inhibition has little effect on cannabidiol. Both agents can cause somnolence and sedation.
What this interaction means in plain words
Cannabidiol and Sertraline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Cannabidiol belongs to Central Nervous System; Sertraline belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Cannabidiol inhibits CYP2C19, reducing sertraline clearance, and additive CNS depression may occur.
What to do
Monitor for sertraline adverse effects such as nausea, sedation and serotonergic symptoms, and reduce the sertraline dose if they occur. Warn the patient about additive drowsiness.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
