Summary
Heparins can suppress adrenal aldosterone production, and an ACE inhibitor also reduces aldosterone, so serum potassium may rise. The risk is higher with renal impairment, diabetes or other potassium-raising drugs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Captopril and Dalteparin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Captopril belongs to Cardiovascular; Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive suppression of aldosterone leading to reduced renal potassium excretion.
What to do
Check serum potassium and renal function at baseline and periodically during prolonged co-therapy. Treat hyperkalemia if it develops and review other potassium-raising drugs.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
