Summary
Both thiazides and corticosteroids promote potassium loss. Together they may cause hypokalemia, and corticosteroids can also cause fluid retention and raise blood pressure, opposing the antihypertensive effect.
What this interaction means in plain words
Captopril-hydrochlorothiazide and Prednisolone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Captopril-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Prednisolone belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Additive renal potassium wasting from thiazide action and the mineralocorticoid effect of prednisolone, plus sodium and fluid retention.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and blood pressure, particularly with prolonged or high-dose steroid therapy. Supplement potassium if needed; the ACE inhibitor component partly offsets potassium loss.
What to ask your pharmacist
