Summary
Carbenoxolone has mineralocorticoid-like activity causing sodium retention, hypertension and hypokalemia. This can counteract the antihypertensive effect of esmolol, and hypokalemia may add to arrhythmia risk.
What this interaction means in plain words
Carbenoxolone and Esmolol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Carbenoxolone inhibits 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, producing mineralocorticoid excess that opposes blood pressure control.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and serum potassium, and correct hypokalemia. Consider an alternative to carbenoxolone if blood pressure control is compromised.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
