Summary
Carbenoxolone has mineralocorticoid-like effects causing sodium and fluid retention and hypokalemia, which can raise blood pressure. This may counteract the antihypertensive effect of labetalol.
What this interaction means in plain words
Carbenoxolone and Labetalol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Carbenoxolone inhibits 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, producing mineralocorticoid excess that opposes antihypertensive therapy.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, fluid status and serum potassium during coadministration. Consider an alternative gastric agent if blood pressure rises.
