Summary

Aminoglycosides are nephrotoxic and ototoxic, and cephalosporins have been reported to add to renal injury when combined with them. Kidney function may decline, which in turn increases aminoglycoside accumulation and toxicity.

What this interaction means in plain words

Cefpodoxime and Kanamycin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive nephrotoxicity, with possible reduced aminoglycoside clearance if renal function declines.

What to do

Monitor serum creatinine and aminoglycoside levels, and assess hearing and vestibular symptoms. Adjust the kanamycin dose to renal function and limit the duration of therapy.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
