Summary

Ceftazidime given with an aminoglycoside such as kanamycin may add to kidney injury risk, and aminoglycosides also carry ototoxic potential. The risk is greatest in patients with pre-existing renal impairment, older age, dehydration or prolonged therapy. Combination is used clinically but warrants monitoring.

What this interaction means in plain words

Ceftazidime and Kanamycin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive nephrotoxicity, with aminoglycoside-related ototoxicity and renal accumulation possibly aggravated by reduced renal function.

What to do

Monitor serum creatinine and urine output regularly, and adjust ceftazidime and kanamycin doses to renal function. Check aminoglycoside levels where available and monitor hearing and vestibular symptoms.

What to ask your pharmacist
