Summary
Voclosporin, a calcineurin inhibitor, is nephrotoxic. Cefuroxime has little intrinsic nephrotoxicity, so any additive kidney risk is small, but renal function matters in lupus nephritis patients receiving voclosporin.
What this interaction means in plain words
Cefuroxime and Voclosporin have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Cefuroxime belongs to Anti Bacterial; Voclosporin belongs to Miscellaneous.
Why it happens
Possible additive renal effects; cefuroxime has minimal nephrotoxic potential, so the interaction is largely theoretical.
What to do
Monitor serum creatinine and eGFR as already required for voclosporin therapy. Adjust cefuroxime dose only if renal function declines.
