Summary

NSAIDs reduce renal prostaglandin-dependent perfusion and may lower clearance of aminoglycosides. This has mainly been described in preterm infants, where serum aminoglycoside concentrations can rise and increase the risk of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. In adults the effect is generally small.

What this interaction means in plain words

Celecoxib and Streptomycin have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Celecoxib belongs to Musculoskeletal; Streptomycin belongs to Anti Bacterial.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Reduced renal blood flow and glomerular filtration from prostaglandin inhibition decreases renal elimination of the aminoglycoside.

What to do

In neonates and in patients with renal impairment, monitor streptomycin serum levels and serum creatinine. No routine change is needed in adults with normal renal function.
