Summary
Both drugs lower serum potassium, so combined use can produce clinically relevant hypokalemia. Low potassium raises the risk of ventricular arrhythmias, particularly in patients with heart disease or those on other QT-prolonging drugs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Chlorthalidone and Isoproterenol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Chlorthalidone belongs to Cardiovascular; Isoproterenol belongs to Respiratory.
Why it happens
Chlorthalidone causes renal potassium wasting while isoproterenol drives potassium into cells via beta-2 adrenergic stimulation of Na+/K+-ATPase.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and ECG when used together and replace potassium to maintain normal levels. Correct magnesium deficits as well.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
