Drug interactions
Ciprofloxacin + Naproxen
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may potentiate fluoroquinolone-associated CNS stimulation, increasing the risk of tremor, agitation, and seizures.
Mechanism of action
Pharmacodynamic: Additive inhibition of GABA-A–mediated neurotransmission by fluoroquinolones; certain NSAIDs can further lower the seizure threshold. No meaningful pharmacokinetic interaction is established.
Clinical management
Avoid the combination in patients with seizure risk or significant CNS disorders when possible; consider acetaminophen as an alternative analgesic. If concomitant use is necessary, use the lowest effective naproxen dose for the shortest duration, adjust ciprofloxacin for renal function, and monitor for CNS symptoms (agitation, tremor, myoclonus, seizures). Discontinue implicated agent(s) if neurotoxicity occurs.
