Clopidogrel + Omega-3-acid ethyl esters

For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Overview

Severity: Moderate · Evidence level: High

Additive antiplatelet effects may increase bleeding risk (e.g., bruising, epistaxis, GI bleeding), particularly at higher omega-3 doses or with additional antithrombotics.

Mechanism of action

Pharmacodynamic: omega-3-acid ethyl esters can prolong bleeding time by reducing platelet aggregation; clopidogrel irreversibly inhibits P2Y12 → additive effect.

Clinical management

Use together with caution; monitor for bleeding (bruising, epistaxis, melena/hematochezia). Counsel patients and reassess therapy if bleeding occurs. Consider holding omega-3 before high-bleeding-risk procedures per local guidance.
