Summary

Both dapsone and ganciclovir can suppress bone marrow function, so combined use may increase the risk of anemia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. Dapsone also causes dose-related hemolysis and methemoglobinemia, which can add to hematologic burden in patients already receiving ganciclovir.

What this interaction means in plain words

Dapsone and Ganciclovir can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Dapsone belongs to Anti Bacterial; Ganciclovir belongs to Anti Virals.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive hematologic toxicity (myelosuppression from ganciclovir plus hemolysis and marrow effects from dapsone).

What to do

Monitor complete blood count regularly, including neutrophils, hemoglobin and platelets, during co-therapy. Reduce doses or interrupt one agent if significant cytopenia develops.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
