Summary
Deflazacort is a corticosteroid with mineralocorticoid activity that causes potassium loss, and combined with hydrochlorothiazide it may produce additive hypokalemia. Fluid retention from the steroid can also oppose blood pressure control.
What this interaction means in plain words
Deflazacort and Hydrochlorothiazide-losartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Deflazacort belongs to Miscellaneous; Hydrochlorothiazide-losartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive renal potassium wasting from corticosteroid and thiazide effects, with steroid-related sodium retention.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and blood pressure, and supplement potassium if needed. Losartan may partly offset potassium loss.
