Summary
Salbutamol shifts potassium into cells, and deflazacort, a corticosteroid, can increase renal potassium loss. Together they may cause hypokalemia, which is more likely with high or repeated salbutamol doses and in acute asthma.
What this interaction means in plain words
Deflazacort and Ipratropium-salbutamol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Deflazacort belongs to Miscellaneous; Ipratropium-salbutamol belongs to Respiratory.
Why it happens
Additive lowering of serum potassium through beta-2 mediated cellular uptake and corticosteroid mineralocorticoid-related renal potassium wasting.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium in patients on high-dose or frequent salbutamol, especially with other potassium-lowering drugs. Replace potassium if levels fall.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
