Summary
Dexmedetomidine is a sedative alpha-2 agonist that causes bradycardia and hypotension, and can add to the sedation of pimozide. Bradycardia also increases the risk of torsades de pointes in patients taking a QT-prolonging drug such as pimozide.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dexmedetomidine and Pimozide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dexmedetomidine belongs to Central Nervous System; Pimozide belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression, with dexmedetomidine-induced bradycardia increasing the effect of pimozide's QT prolongation.
What to do
Monitor sedation level, heart rate, blood pressure and ECG during infusion. Reduce the dexmedetomidine dose if excessive sedation or bradycardia occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
