What this interaction means in plain words
Diamorphine and Hydroxyzine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Why it happens
Additive central nervous system and respiratory depression from opioid agonism and central H1 antagonism.
What to do
Start with reduced doses and monitor sedation level and respiratory rate closely. Avoid in patients with compromised respiratory function unless monitored.
