Summary
NSAIDs may increase the central nervous system stimulating effects of fluoroquinolones and lower the seizure threshold. Seizures are uncommon but are more likely at high fluoroquinolone doses, in older patients, in renal impairment or with epilepsy.
What this interaction means in plain words
Diflunisal and Ofloxacin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Diflunisal belongs to Musculoskeletal; Ofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Fluoroquinolones antagonize GABA-A receptors and NSAIDs may potentiate this effect; the precise mechanism is not fully established.
What to do
Avoid the combination in patients with seizure disorders or other risk factors for seizures. Otherwise use the lowest effective ofloxacin dose and counsel patients to report tremor, confusion or seizures.
What to ask your pharmacist
