Summary
Nadolol is a nonselective beta-blocker that blocks the beta-1 receptors through which dobutamine increases contractility and heart rate, so inotropic benefit may be blunted. Unopposed alpha-1 mediated vasoconstriction can occur, raising blood pressure and systemic vascular resistance with possible reflex bradycardia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dobutamine and Nadolol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dobutamine belongs to Cardiovascular; Nadolol belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic antagonism at beta-adrenergic receptors, with unopposed alpha-adrenergic effects of dobutamine.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, heart rate and cardiac output closely; higher dobutamine doses may be needed, or consider a non-adrenergic inotrope such as milrinone if beta-blockade must be overcome.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?

The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
How serious is the interaction between Dobutamine and Nadolol?
MediHelp rates it moderate, on a four-level scale (minor, moderate, major, contraindicated) based on published labels and references. What to do, in brief: Monitor blood pressure, heart rate and cardiac output closely; higher dobutamine doses may be needed, or consider a non-adrenergic inotrope such as milrinone if beta-blockade must be overcome.
